If we are to reduce the demand for sex work and change misogynistic attitudes towards women, it is essential that we work with men. This year, the Shining Star team are experiencing a strong positive interest from men in having these conversations at universities, in prisons, at sex work hot spots and through sports tournaments. Several tournaments have been run with staff talking to over 200 men who were participating and spectating.
Lunchtime groups at workplaces and talks at local churches have also galvanized helpful discussions about attitudes, culture and women’s rights. The team have also had these discussions at night in bars and clubs, conducted street walks giving out information and condoms and also talked to uniformed men. In fact, sports tournaments with armed forces/police groups have proved very popular with over 150 attending and talking about gender-based violence and HIV services.
