ChildAid’s Little Lighthouse in Makariv opened its doors on 1 April 2021 and had very early successes. With faith, prayer and much volunteer support a new rehabilitation and children’s centre was established in the basement of the local Baptist church. Being the only free-to-access rehabilitation facility for many miles for children with disabilities (including autism, physical and complex needs) it was instantly popular, but more importantly achieved miraculous results - such as young Bogdan with severe autism whose only communication was shouting and who had little control of his body. After a few short sessions his speech became clearer and his behaviour improved, so he rarely shouted and was able to kick a ball around with his father: a dream his father thought would never happen.
Makariv was on the frontline of the invasion and all Little Lighthouse families were evacuated. They have now returned and, despite the destruction around them, need to focus on the love and care their children need so much.
