Medical Electives
Medical Electives
Medical students often say that their medical elective is one of the most memorable experiences of their career - so how do you make it an experience to remember? Your elective can range between 6-12 weeks and you want it to be in a setting that will stretch your medical knowledge.
It’s worth taking the time to look into different placement options and the opportunities they offer to explore various areas of medicine and medical research. If you’re interested in a particular field or have a certain skill set, then it’s worth looking into placements where these can be utilised.
Being in a medical context in another country will really stretch you and give you an insight into how medicine operates differently to the UK. Many of the hospitals do not have the same funding that we have in the UK, so access to medicines and equipment can be much more challenging.
Medicine in a mission context will give you a much higher appreciation for healthcare in the UK, but also stretch your skills to adapting to cope with what you have available. It will also allow you to experience another culture, and potentially working with a language barrier too.
This trip has truly been one of the highlights of medical school and has encouraged me to seek out other opportunities similar to this in the future. Everyone was so kind, welcoming and caring. It has been such an incredible learning experience and it has been so insightful to see how medicine can look different in other countries.
Deciding what to do, where to go and how to get there can seem a daunting task but we can help point you in the right direction. We would recommend organising it through a mission organisation as they provide great support before, during and after the elective.
If you decide to do your elective in a mission context, then you're able to apply for a bursary through MMN towards your travel expenses.
This involves giving a report of your time at the end of your placement reflecting on how God used your time overseas.

Getting to know the team better has been a joy. It is a privilege to work with a group of Christians that live lives so obviously shaped by their faith.
Thank you for getting in touch, we will get back to you as soon as possible.
