ACHERU is a rehabilitation unit for disabled children where all of its support is focused on the gospel.
They offer treatment for physical disabilities such as cleft lip, club foot and cerebral palsy through outpatient clinics or surgery – the programme at ACHERU is so well regarded that the Ministry of Health has started referring their patients to the clinic for treatment.
The team do a lot of community work to support families with medical services they offer, community education aimed at prevention and where children can be assessed and referred for further treatment if required. They, also, help families suffering particular deprivation with food parcels right through to fostering of children where the home circumstances are such that they cannot be returned there.
When children are in ACHERU they will be accompanied by carers, and, as well as the medical treatment required, the children’s education will be maintained by a qualified teacher. The carers will also be given instruction/training in various subjects related to home making and care of children.
The team offer an active programme to teach children about Jesus and offer fellowship, which is very well attended – the meetings are run in partnership with the local church and the ACHERU children sing in local churches and schools to make the work more widely known.
